Rainstorms and flooding

We have heard today, Friday 22nd November 2019, that there has been heavy and  sustained rain for two days in Djibouti city resulting in local flooding. Djibouti city has a population of 500,000 but many, many people live in shacks and many more live on the streets, including some 1,300 children. Two men are sheltering in the stairwell at the team’s residence where they are being supplied with tea and blankets.

Devastating floods do happen from time to time. Last year’s flood will be fresh in many minds.  Cyclone Sagar struck the country on 19-20 May 2018 bringing torrential rains that caused heavy flooding in Djibouti, especially in Djibouti City.  At least two people were killed and between 25,000 and 50,000 people were seriously affected by the cyclone, according to government statistics.  Many people, who were already in difficulty, lost their homes and possessions.

The forecast today is for thunderstorms and and heavy rain daily at least until Friday 29th November.

Please pray that it will not be like it was in 2018.

Please pray for God to have mercy on those affected, that relief will come shortly.

Pray for safety for those who are already involved in rescue and support.
