Placement Tests 2022-23

On 10th – 12th September, Emmanuel English Language Centre held placement tests! These are offered every year for new students to test and see if they have a solid foundation in English so are ready to join the teaching programmes. It is also a great way for teachers to learn more about Djibouti, through its many different peoples!

This year was no different! Many students queued outside the building before it was even open! One of the great things about being the oldest English school in Djibouti, and the cheapest, is that EELC is trusted and word spreads quickly!

  • It was encouraging that Somalis, Afar and Yemenis all came with a desire to learn English.
  • There were even a few Malagasy ladies this year!
  • One teacher lives next to a quiet, humble Yemeni man who has always wanted to learn English but was not sure he would be good enough. However, for the first time he came along and passed the test for one of the classes, much to the teacher’s pleasure!
  • One lady used to be a doctor at a local hospital. She had stopped to have two children and now was looking for a change, so wanted to improve her English.
  • One Afar man was a Professor of Mathematics, who wanted to do more work in Europe. For this his English would have to improve.
  • Some refugees came, wanting to gain some more international skills.

It was a real joy and encouragement for everyone to hear some of the life stories of the new students.

May everyone get to know each other even better over the next year!
