In November 2025 the NGO celebrated 50 years serving in Djibouti and now, in March 2026, the celebrations are for the 20 years of the Oasis library in Tadjourah!
The celebrations will take place in late March after Ramadan. (Keep an eye out for that blog!)
But before one can celebrate, there must be preparations. And no preparations are complete without a fresh coat of paint. Thankfully a short-term team of French volunteers were able to visit Tadjourah at the end of February. They were only present for a week, but they were busy! They set to work the instant they entered Oasis.
Fresh paint was applied to all the walls in Oasis. Doors were repaired so they now have functional handles. Five new tables were fitted and 10 benches were painted. The ceiling was repaired as parts were cracked and it was starting to fall apart. Rooms were rearranged to open up space for more activities and games for the children.
One wall was decorated with a twist on a traditional proverb in Afar: “If you draw from the oasis, thirst will disappear.” Now the wall says, “If you draw from the Oasis, ignorance will disappear.”
The library just needs one last thorough clean and some decorative additions and it will be ready for the 20 year anniversary celebrations!
